Drug Uses of Yasmin
Yasmin (Drospirenone and Ethinyl Estradiol) is a common contraceptive used to prevent pregnancy. This birth control pill contains a female progestin hormone that is called drospirenone. Yasmin inhibits the ovulation that prevents pregnancy so in a way the way this drug functions is very simple. Yasmin pills also change the cervical mucus that prevents sperm from getting into the uterine and the endometrium that reduces the possibility of implantation.
Yasmin does not protect from any HIV infections including AIDS or other sexually transmitted diseases. You must consult your doctor before you decide to take or to buy Yasmin pills.
How Yasmin Is Taken
Yasmin comes in a packet of 28 pills. This packet consists of 21 active pills and 7 inert pills. The active Yasmin pills are of yellow color and the inert ones are of white color. The active Yasmin pills contain active components (hormones) of Yasmin: ethinyl estradiol and drospirenon. The inert Yasmin pills do not contain any hormones. The active pills must be taken throughout the days 1-21 of the cycle and the inert pills must be taken throughout days 22-28 of the menstrual cycle. Yasmin must be taken regularly every month. You must start taking Yasmin pills either on the first day of your menstruation cycle (Day 1 Start) or on the first Sunday after the onset of the menstruation cycle (Sunday Start).
Day 1 Start: Start taking Yasmin pills on the first day of your menstruation cycle. Yasmin pills must be taken regularly during 21 days. It is preferable to take Yasmin at the same time every day. The recommended time is after your evening meal or at bedtime. When the menstrual cycle starts again the patient must take the inert white Yasmin pills daily. White Yasmin pills must be taken throughout days 22-28. If you start Yasmin pills at the beginning of your period, then you will not need to use any other methods of contraception. If you have not started taking Yasmin pills within 24 hours of your first menstruation day, then Yasmin birth control pills should not be considered an effective contraceptive until after the first 7 days of Yasmin consumption.
Sunday Start: Take the first yellow pill of Yasmin on the first Sunday after your period starts. The yellow Yasmin pills must be taken every day for 21 consecutive days. You must start taking Yasmin on the first Sunday after the onset of your menstruation cycle even if you are still bleeding. It is recommended to take Yasmin pills at the same time every day. The preferable time to take Yasmin is after the evening meal or at bedtime. After all active yellow Yasmin pills have been taken you must continue taking the white Yasmin pills throughout days 22-28. You must use other methods of birth control (such as condoms or spermicides) within the first 7 days after you start taking Yasmin. These birth control pills can be considered an effective contraceptive only after you have been taking it for 7 days.
Warnings/Precautions on Yasmin
Before you start taking Yasmin pills or you decide to buy Yasmin pills you must talk to your doctor. You must tell your doctor if you have had a heart attack, stroke, and blood clot; if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, angina, a blood-clotting, or bleeding disorder. You doctor must be informed if you have breast, uterine or another hormone-related cancer and also if you have undiagnosed, abnormal vaginal bleeding. Before your doctor prescribes you Yasmin pills you must tell him/her if you have diabetes, gallbladder disease, high cholesterol, and epilepsy, a history of depression, migraines or other headaches, a history of scanty or irregular menstrual periods. You must also mention to your doctor if you smoke cigarettes or if you need an extended period of bed rest due to surgery or illness.
Yasmin pills belong to the category X of the FDA. Pills of this category can cause birth defects in an unborn child. As Yasmin is a birth control pill that contains hormones, it can cause hormonal changes during pregnancy that will affect seriously an unborn baby. Yasmin pills cannot be taken if you are pregnant or you suspect that you might be pregnant.
You must talk to you doctor if you are a breast-feeding mother before you start to take or to buy Yasmin pills. This birth control pill passes into breast milk and can affect your baby. Yasmin pills can also decrease milk production.
Do not smoke if you are taking Yasmin birth control pills. Cigarette smoking increases the risk of serious adverse effects on the heart and blood vessels. This risk of these side effects increases with age and heavy smoking. To avoid serious side effects of Yasmin pills to your health and body you must not smoke when you take these birth control pills.
If Yasmin Dose Has been Missed
If 1 yellow active Yasmin pill has been missed:
- The missed Yasmin pill must be taken as soon as you remember about it. The next Yasmin pill must be taken at your regular time. This means that two Yasmin pills can be taken in one day. You do not have to use a back-up birth control method if you have sex.
If 2 yellow active Yasmin pills have been missed in a row in WEEK 1 or WEEK 2 of your pack:
- You must take two yellow active Yasmin pills on the day when you remember and then two Yasmin pills the next day.
- After that you must continue taking Yasmin pills every day according to your schedule until you finish the whole pack
- You must use back-up birth control methods if you have sex within 7 days after if you do not take Yasmin. If you do not use other birth control methods you may become pregnant if you have sex in a 7 days period after Yasmin pills have been missed.
If 2 yellow active Yasmin pills have been missed in a row during WEEK 3:
1) If you are a DAY 1 Starter you must throw out the rest of the Yasmin pack and start a new pack the same day.
2) If you are a Sunday Starter you must continue taking one Yasmin pill every day on a regular basis till Sunday. On Sunday you must throw out the rest of the Yasmin pack and start a new pack of Yasmin pills the same day.
- You must use another birth control method if you have sex within 7 days after you have not taken your birth control. If you do not use a back-up birth control method you may become pregnant.
- It is possible that you will not have your period the first month after you stop taking your birth control but this is to be expected. But if you do not have your period for two months in a row, then you must visit your doctor because of the possibilities of being pregnant.
If 3 or more yellow active Yasmin pills have been missed in a row during the first three weeks:
1) If you are a Day 1 Starter you must throw out the rest of the Yasmin pack and start a new pack that same day.
2) If you are a Sunday Starter you must continue taking Yasmin pills every day until Sunday. On Sunday throw out the rest of the Yasmin pack and start a new pack of Yasmin pills that same day.
- Back-up birth control methods must be used if you have sex in 7 days after Yasmin pills have been missed. You may become pregnant if you have sex during these 7 days.
- It is to be expected that you will not have your period this month. If you do not have a period two months in a row then you might be pregnant and you should set up and appointment with your doctor immediately.
If 1 or more white inert Yasmin pills have been missed:
- You must throw out the pills that you have missed and continue taking Yasmin pills every day on schedule. You do not need a back-up birth control method if you have sex after the white inert Yasmin pills have been skipped.
Possible Side Effects of Yasmin
Yasmin pills can cause some serious side effects that can be dangerous for your body and some less serious ones that can only bring you some discomfort until your body has not gotten used to these birth control pills.
One of the most common side effects that patients may increase when taking Yasmin pills is VAGINAL BLEEDING.
In some cases irregular vaginal bleeding or spotting may occur when Yasmin pills are being taken. Vaginal bleeding may vary from slight staining to heavy bleeding that is alike to a regular menstrual bleeding. Vaginal irregular bleeding is most often during the first few months of taking Yasmin pills. It may also occur after Yasmin pills have been being taken for some time. Usually vaginal bleeding does not indicate any serious problem in your body. You must continue taking Yasmin pills regularly even if you have vaginal bleeding. It is expected that this bleeding will last for a few days. But if vaginal bleeding occurs in more than one cycle when you taking Yasmin pills or if bleeding lasts for more than few days, you must talk to your doctor or healthcare provider for further assistance.
In some patients Yasmin pills can cause edema (fluid retention). Edema can be accompanied by swelling of fingers or ankles; it can also raise your blood pressure. You must talk to your doctor if you suffer from fluid retention (edema).
Some patients were noticed to have melasma when they were taking Yasmin pills. Melasma is a spotty darkening of the skin that occurs most often on the face. This side effect cannot be construed as dangerous for your body, but you must talk to your doctor in case you suffer from this side effect.
Patients who wear contact lenses must be extremely cautious while taking Yasmin pills. If you notice some changes in your vision or if you notice that you7 are unable to wear your contact lenses when you are taking Yasmin pills, you must consult your doctor.
Some other side effects were also noticed among the patients taking Yasmin pills. These side effects may include headache, nervousness, change in appetite, depression, dizziness, rash, loss of scalp hair, and vaginal infections. If you suffer from any of these side effects you must talk to your doctor or healthcare provider.
Storage of Yasmin
Yasmin pills must be stored in a dry place that cannot be reached by children at a room temperature (15°-30°C that is equal to 59°-86°F). The preferable temperature for Yasmin pills is 25°C (77°F).
Overdose of Yasmin
No serious side effects have been reported after the overdose of Yasmin pills. If young children accidentally take large doses of Yasmin pills you must consult your doctor immediately. However no serious problems were noticed even in young children who have taken Yasmin pills by accident. Most commonly Yasmin overdose causes nausea or withdrawal bleeding in women.
The active component of Yasmin pills, drospirenone, is an analogue of spironolactone that has antimineralocorticoid properties. If the Yasmin overdose has occurred you might need special monitoring of serum concentration of potassium and sodium, and evidence of metabolic acidosis.
More Information on Yasmin
Before you take or buy Yasmin pills you need to have an examination by your doctor. Your health care provider must take your medical and family history before he/she prescribes you Yasmin pills. The physical examination may be postponed if you request it and if your doctor thinks it is appropriate to delay it.
